Samba Mahsuri (BPT 5204) developed by ANGRAU during 1980s, is a highly popular rice variety among the farmers in South India and some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The variety has medium slender grain and excellent cooking qualities. It is a highly preferred rice variety among the farmers and consumers. However, the variety is highly susceptible to rice diseases including rice blast and bacterial blight diseases. Rice blast disease caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae and bacterial blight caused by the bacteria Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae are two highly effective diseases of rice throughout Asia and particularly in India. These diseases have continuous trouble to rice farmers since the beginning of rice cultivation and can cause severe yield loss as high as 50% or more. Pyramiding blast and bacterial blight resistance genes in a single cultivar will help in tackling both the disease problems.

Technology Details:
DRRDHAN-62 (RP 6286-Bio Patho 5-156-24-7 (IET 28804)) is a Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) derived, durable blast and bacterial blight resistant high-yielding, fine-grain type rice variety developed in the genetic background of a very popular bacterial blight resistant rice variety, Improved Samba Mahsuri (RP Bio-226). It is having three major bacterial blight resistance genes, Xa21+xa13+xa5 (located on chr. 11, 8 and 5 respectively) and two major blast resistance genes Pi-2+Pi54 (located on chr. 6 and 11 respectively) and has seed to seed maturity of 135-140 days and gives a maximum yield of 6.1 t/ ha. It is highly Resistant to Leaf Blast, BLB, Neck blast, Brown spot and Sheath rot. Based on background analysis, it has shown > 92% recovery of recurrent parent genome, Improved Samba Mahsuri. DRRDHAN-62 possesses medium-slender grains with good Hulling (77.0%), Milling (67.4%), HRR (61.2%), acceptable amylose content (26.51%), GC (45 mm), ASV (4.0) and is comparable to the recurrent parent, Improved Samba Mahsuri in all the grain and cooking quality parameters.
