Technology Background
Cultivation of okra is seriously affected by various biotic stresses including viral diseases. The most serious diseases of okra caused by viruses are yellow vein mosaic virus (YVMV) and Okra enation leaf curl virus (OELCV). Among these, yellow vein mosaic virus is very serious and causes loss to the tune of 50-90%. In case of sever OELCV infestation plant may become sterile and may be responsible for total yield loss. Besides dark green colour fruits with 10-12 cm length have more consumer preference. Most of the present-day varieties have low yield potential and were also susceptible to YVMV and OELCV diseases except few.
Technology Details
This variety was identified for zone-IV (Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar and Jharkhand) through multilocation evaluation under resistant varietal trial by AICRP (Vegetable Crops). The variety is having important trait of YVMV resistance/tolerance, dark green fruits, easy to harvest, making it suitable for, making it suitable for both spring-summer and rainy season in the recommended zone. For seed production, it took 125-135 days for seed maturity after sowing. The variety found to be superior for pods per plant and yield per hectare and YVMV tolerance over the standard check ’Kashi Kranti’.
Unique characteristics:
1. Medium plant height (130-140 cm) with short internodes
2. First flower appears at 5-6 nodes after 40-43 days of sowing.
3. 1-3 branches attached in narrow angle with the main stem.
4. It produces dark green self-colour fruits free from basal ring formation and seed bulging.
5. Fruits are easy to harvest.
6. First fruits harvest in 45-48 DAS & fruiting period is 48-110 days with 32-35 harvest.
7. Fruit yield ranges from 135-145 q/ha which is 20-23% higher than the best check.
8. Resistant to both YVMV and ELCV disease.
9. Based on the performance it was recommended by AICRP (VC) for the zone-IV (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Punjab)
