Background:

In intensive aquaculture, biotic and abiotic stressors cause physiological changes in fish resulting stress or immunosuppression. Stress also heightens susceptibility to infection, disease outbreak and fish mortality. Stress increases production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals causing fish diseases and mortality. Fish farming is largely threatened by bacterial pathogens. Several veterinary drugs are used as prophylactics or therapeutics or as growth promoters. Antibiotics used to control diseases are having undesirable consequences to humans and the environment. To avoid these untoward effects and economic loss, the aquaculture industry is necessitating eco-friendly approach in fish disease management.

CIFRI-Pre Bio Mix is a natural origin feed supplement composition comprising a plant origin fermentable polysaccharide as prebiotic, a heat killed bacterial/fungal cells as immunotherapeutic agent for augmenting gut mucosal immune response and a plant origin pigment as edible antioxidant. The polysaccharide is capable to enhance immunity both by direct binding with immune cell binders and stimulate them for enhanced immunity as well as by getting fermented (prebiotic) to short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the gut, improve gut health and enhance indirect immunity. Incorporated heat killed fungal cells provide molecules that are capable of enhancing direct or indirect non-specific immunity and can also flash out pathogenic bacteria from gut by binding with the pathogen. The incorporated bacterial cell wall are able to generate robust non-specific immunity in very short span of time. Added plant pigment is a strong and heat stable antioxidant, also having non-specific immunostimulant effect. Three components in a select ratio enhance direct/ indirect immunity of non-specific type synergistically. The composition is easily incorporable in all kinds of feed, treated feed can be fed for many short spans during growing period of fish in hatchery, shrimp farms, enclosure/ tank culture, ornamental fishes. It can also be fed for long duration (continuous feeding). Short span of feeding before transportation of fingerlings for stocking will enable the fishes to cope better in the new environment. Feeding before seasonal changes will prevent infection and disease occurrences. Feeding for a significant period, also results in increase in fish body weight.
