VL Biofortified Maize Hybrid 201 (VL Suposhita) is a double-biofortifed (QPM + high Zinc) high yielding and early maturing single cross hybrid. It possesses tryptophan and lysine content of 0.82 and 3.57%, respectively, and kernel zinc content of 37.17 ppm. It matures in 90-95 days. Its average yield in the All India Coordinated Trials in Zone I (Northern Hill Zone) was 6,819 kg/ha, which was 7.72% higher than the check variety HQPM 5. It exhibited moderate resistance against turcicum leaf blight. It has been recommended North Western Hill Zone (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand Hills) and North Eastern Hill Region (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura). Being high yielding and biofortified for essential amino acids Tryptophan, Lysine and Zinc, the hybrid will help in improving nutritional security among maize consuming populations. Owing to its short duration, this hybrid can fit into various maize-based cropping systems prevalent in the country. The parental lines are high yielding and nick well and VL Suposhita, therefore, is a suitable hybrid for commercialization.
