VL Biofortified Maize Hybrid 101 (VL Lophy) is a high yielding, early maturing and low phytate single cross hybrid. It matures in 90-95 days and its phytate content is 2.16 mg/g. Its average yield in the All India Coordinated Trials in Zone I (Northern Hill Zone) was 6,046 kg/ha. It exhibited moderate resistance against turcicum leaf blight. VL Lophy has been recommended North Western Hill Zone (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand Hills) and North Eastern Hill Region (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura). Being high yielding and possessing low phytate content, the hybrid will help in improving nutritional security among maize consuming populations. Further, owing to its short duration, this hybrid can fit into various maize-based cropping systems prevalent in the country. The parental lines are high yielding and nick well and VL Biofortified Maize Hybrid 101 (VL Lophy), therefore, is a suitable hybrid for commercialization.
