ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR)Background:
Wheat is a major staple crop that plays a vital role in ensuring food and nutritional securitb worldwide. To develop improved wheat varieties at a faster pace, breeders need reliable and affordable tools for studying genetic diversity, characterizing germplasm, identifying useful traits, selecting superior breeding lines, and verifying varietal purity. While advances in sequencing technologies have made large amounts of genomic data available, their routine use in breeding programs is often limited by high costs, specialized infrastructure requirements, and the complexity of data analysis. Therefore, there is a growing need for practical, high-throughput genotyping platforms that can support large-scale Wheat improvement programs in a cost- effective manner.
Solution Description:
The innovation is a high-throughput SNP genotyping platform developed using genome-wide sequence data from diverse wheat genetic resources including those from India and other parts Of the world . A key feature Of the platform is the inclusion Of subgenome-specific markers that can accurately distinguish genetic variation present in the A, B, and D genomes of wheat. This enables precise and reliable genotyping in the complex wheat genome. The platform can be used for genetic diversity studies, trait mapping, marker-assisted breeding, genomic selection, DNA fingerprinting, varietal identification, and seed purity testing. It offers high accuracy, specificity to sub genomes and cost-effectiveness, making it a practical tool for researchers and breeders working to accelerate wheat improvement.
