ICAR-NISA Natural gum-based nanocomposite hydrogel having antibacterial & wound healing effects

Technology Details:

The present technology describes the method of preparation for natural gum-based hydrogels and formulation of hydrogel nanocomposites (NC) with the greenly synthesized silver nanoparticle using palas tannin. The hydrogel was preferably prepared by the free radical mediated graft copolymerization of natural gum (gum ghatti and guar gum) with acrylic acid derivatives by making use of initiator and crosslinker involving select levels of gum and acrylate monomers and also incorporating palas tannin mediated silver nanoparticles via ex-situ and in-situ methods.

The synthesized NC hydrogel was found to be biocompatible and it shows zero cytotoxic effect   with Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC) lines. The NC hydrogel exhibited efficient release kinetics of nanoparticles in targeted biological media which in turn found to trigger antibacterial, antibiofilm activity against gram positive Strepcoccus aureus  and gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria at sub MIC doses they have shown significant impairment of biofilm forming ability of both the organisms.

The synthesized NC hydrogel was evaluated as wound healing agent in the animal model on mice. The results of the wound healing evaluation led to the conclusion that natural gum based NC hydrogel has significant wound healing capability in murine model as compared to control.
