VRPM-107 (Pea Variety)

Technology Background:

Developing pea cultivars with long, bold, attractive green pods carrying 9-12 seeds and high pod weight has been a long-standing goal in pea breeding. Alongside pod traits, higher yield and sweeter peas are equally important. In India, ’PC-531’ remains a widely adopted mid-maturity variety due to its high yield potential (120-140 q/ha) and shelling percentage (50-55%), released in 2007. However, to overcome yield stagnation and meet evolving market demands, there is a continued need to breed improved cultivars with superior pod quality, better taste, and enhanced productivity to replace existing varieties like PC- 531.

Technology Details:

The genotype VRPM-107 exhibits distinct dark green, highly attractive pods measuring 9-12 cm in length (Figure 1). Each pods contain 9-10 seeds dark green bold seeds. VRPM-107 recorded a yield of 140.10 q/ha, which is 21.13% higher than Kashi Shakti and 17.59% higher than PC- 531, demonstrating superior productivity (Stations trials conducted at ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi). With a medium plant stature, the proposed variety eliminates the requirement for staking or support under field conditions, thereby contributing to reduced cultivation costs and improved agronomic efficiency.
