ICAR - National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology (NIANP)Background:
In recent decades, transport of farm animals have been increasing steadily and it may continue increasing as a result of specialized production systems and globalization of marketing systems. The sheep farming principally involving production of meat, milk, wool and skin inevitably entails transportation. Following commercialization of livestock systems, the traditional method of transport of sheep on trekking has diminished. Presently, various shipment modes like road, rail, ship and airways have been utilized in the movement of sheep from one place to other with increasing urbanization, wherein transportation by road is increasingly frequent and more important. Sheep forms one of the major commodities in livestock sector in India. India possesses 75 million sheep. Stress is unavoidable during handling, overcrowding and transport. Stress due to transportation of animals causes significant loss of energy, vitamins, minerals and electrolytes in the body leading to physiological imbalance thereby affecting the performance and well being of sheep.
Technology Details:
TransCare for sheep is a feed supplement for sheep to be fed at 5-10 g per animal dose to relieve transport stress. Stress is unavoidable during handling, overcrowding and transport of farm animals’ particularly meat-producing animals. Stress due to the transportation of farm animals causes a significant decline of energy, vitamins, minerals and electrolytes in the body leading to physiological imbalance and affecting the performance and wellbeing of goats. This product is composed of vitamins, minerals, energy sources and electrolytes specifically required for sheep. These components are blended at optimal proportions to provide relief from transportation stress. Administration of Transcare helps the goat to maintain their physiological functions by restoring the vitamins, minerals and electrolyte imbalance caused by transportation stress.
