Background
Conventional varieties of Indian mustard have high erucic acid content (~40%) among the different fatty acids present in mustard oil; and high glucosinolates in de-oiled seed meal cake. Both these compounds are not good for human and animal health, respectively. As per WHO recommendations, erucic acid in Indian mustard oil should be less than 2% and glucosinolates should be <30 ppm for better health.
Technology Details
Pusa Double Zero Mustard variety is having both erucic acid (<2%) and glucosinolate (<30ppm) contents as per International Standards making the oil as well as seed meal better for both human beings and animals. This is the first double low (Canola type) variety of India mustard with low erucic acid (<2%) in oil and low glucosinolates (<30ppm) in defatted seed meal cake. Being first Canola Type Mustard variety from the country it has a very great potential for commercialization.
