ICAR - Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI)

Potato clone, MP/14-171

Technology Details: Potato is the world’s third most important food crop after rice and wheat. India is now producing 60 million tonnes of potatoes from an area of 2.2 million ha with an average productivity of 24 t/ ha and is the 2nd largest producer after China. The present scenario, there is an increasing demand of potatoes for processing industry, as about 10% potatoes are processed in India compared to >50% in Europe and US. The expansion of the potato processing industry in Southern India has highlighted significant challenges. Processor of Southern India have limited choice of varieties largely they are unsuitable for processing, and processing potatoes are transported from Central India, leading to substantial transportation losses. Keeping in view the same, ICAR-CPRI has developed MP/14-171 exhibiting excellent traits for processing into chips with medium maturity as compared to the already developed variety, Kufri Chipsona-5 which would certainly meet out the requirement of processing industries.
