VRPE-100 (Pea Variety)

Technology Background:

Early maturing pea varieties are highly preferred by farmers and consumers due to their economic value and quality traits. Despite the availability of several garden pea varieties, there remains a critical gap in short-duration, high-yielding genotypes that combine early maturity, high shelling percentage, and superior organoleptic qualities. In regions where early marketability and multiple cropping systems are prioritized, the demand for early-maturing varieties with determinate growth habit and compact plant architecture is increasing.

Technology Details:

The genotype is having important trait of early DTF (35-40 days; DTP;65-75 Days), suitable for 2-3 picking which is ready in first week of Dec (short duration). The plants are determinate, with shorter internodal length, Ist flower appeared on 8th to 9th node onward. The pods are very attractive and slightly curved in shape, having on average 8.4 seeds/pod. Plant bears 10-14 dark green pods of 8-8.5cm long, having pod width of 1.5cm, ten pod weight of 73-80 g, 100-green seed weight of 55g. VRPE-100 achieved a yield of 116.1 q/ha, representing a 7.70% increase over Kashi Ageti and 5.83% over Kashi Purvi, highlighting its superior yield potential (station trials data at ICAR-IIVR Varanasi). Notably, VRPE-100 exhibited the highest shelling percentage (52.7%), which is a critical trait for consumer acceptance and processing. Additionally, it recorded the highest total soluble solids (TSS) of 14.4°Brix, suggesting excellent taste and sweetness.
