ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI)Technology Background:
Early-maturing pea varieties are in high demand among both farmers and consumers due to their economic returns and desirable quality traits. To take advantage of premium market prices, farmers typically sow peas from late September to mid-October. However, the currently available early-maturing varieties are limited, often low-yielding, and characterized by single pod-bearing plants, which restricts overall productivity and profitability. There is a critical need for short-duration (65– 75 days), high-yielding varieties that can be harvested by early December. This would not only meet early market demands but also facilitate the timely planting of subsequent crops, such as wheat, within the optimal sowing window.
Technology Details:
Kashi Dhanvi is an early-maturing pea variety, developed at the institute and identified by the Institute Technology Identification Committee, ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi. It flowers in 35-40 days and is ready for picking in 70-75 days under the Indo-Gangetic plains, particularly well-suited to Uttar Pradesh. Its pods contain 8-8.6 seeds with 50-52% shelling and sweeter green seeds having a TSS of 13.7 °B. The variety offers an excellent yield potential of 115-120 q/ha, with individual plants yielding 90-110 g and 1000 dry seeds weighing approximately 245 g. Being early to harvest, it escapes the major disease of peas like rust and powdery mildew. The variety is having important trait of synchronous maturity, making it suitable for single picking which is ready in first week of Dec (short duration). The variety found to be superior for yield per hectare over the standard check ’Kashi Udai’ and ’VP1305 tested under AICRP (VC) trials (average percent increase of 23 and 33% over both the checks, respectively). Suitable for single harvesting with short crop duration, due to which it can easily fit in to various cropping sequences, especially suitable for rice-wheat cropping sequence of the region. Due to its earliness, variety is also able to escape major diseases like powdery mildew and rust. Chief attributes of economic importance of Kashi Dhanvi as follows:
