Brimato (Production technology)

Technology Background:

Tomato, brinjal and potato are the most important vegetable crops that grown and consumed at large scale in Uttar Pradesh. To realization of potential yields, these vegetable crops also require a lot of inputs in term of fertilizers, pesticides, inter-cultural operations, etc. Besides, these vegetables are also prone to various abiotic (drought, waterlogging, salinity) and biotic stresses (bacterial wilt, collar rot, late blight, nematodes). Grafting technology has immense potentials to cope up with many biotic and abiotic stresses. Furthermore, in view of ever-increasing demands for fresh produce along with deceasing cultivable lands in urban and urban will pose great challenge to food security. To encourage vegetable farming within the limited space available in urban establishments to cater the need of ever-growing urban population for fresh vegetables. In this direction, the dual grafting of brinjal and tomato on a single brinjal plant, termed as ’Brimato’ is an innovative grafting technology wherein both brinjal and tomato could be harvested from a single plant. Brimato has immense potential for large-scale adoption for production of homegrown fresh vegetables in urban and peri-urban areas, where space has always been a constraint.

Technology Details:

Brimato technology was first time evolved at ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi for enhancing productivity of brinjal and tomato with less investment on inputs. The rootstock IC-111056 use for brimato production has also tolerance to waterlogging (4 days), salinity (4 dS/m) and drought (50 days field condition). An average yield of 2.75 kg of brinjal and 3.50 kg of tomato fruits could be harvested from a Brimato plant with B:C of 1.91 and net profit of 6.40 lakh/ ha. Adoption of Brimato and Pomato technology not only enhanced yield by 1.5-2.0 times, but also save considerable quantities of inputs, as two vegetables could be harvested with use of same inputs. The demand of grafted seedlings is increasing all over India year by year, thereby production of grafted seedlings could be a profitable venture for youth, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas. This fancy vegetable is most suitable for growing in kitchen garden, terrace and in pots.
