ICAR - Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR)Background:
The cultivation of high-yielding rice varieties (HYVs) in India has significantly boosted rice production, yet it is accompanied by several critical challenges. Monoculture practices with HYVs have led to resistance breakdown in pests and diseases due to increased selection pressure, while genetic purity and seed quality deteriorate over time due to cross-pollination, improper seed maintenance, and farmer reliance on recycled seeds. Additionally, HYVs demand intensive agrochemical inputs, resulting in environmental degradation, soil health decline, and public health concerns. Over time, some HYVs exhibit yield stagnation or decline due to emerging biotic and abiotic stresses, compounded by nutrient depletion in soils. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of a limited set of HYVs has reduced agro-biodiversity, increasing systemic vulnerability to pest outbreaks and climatic variability. Addressing these issues requires integrated pest management, strengthened seed systems, sustainable farming practices, and the conservation and utilization of diverse genetic resources in breeding programs.
Technology Details:
DRR Dhan 75: IET 30107 (RP6528-RMS 1421-43-25-29) was developed from the cross Samba Mahsuri *2 //Habataki / ST 12. The donor lines were received from IRRI, Philippines. We developed this line through a series of crosses, selections, and evaluations conducted at the ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. It was identified during station trials based on its desirable traits, semi-dwarf plant height, medium duration, medium slender grain type, and high yield potential. As a result, line IET 30107 (RP6528-RMS 1421-43-25-29) was nominated to AICRPR, which has performed exceedingly well in the states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Gujarat and Maharashtra under AICRPR Medium Slender trials over 3 years (2021, 2022 and 2023). Overall mean basis of the all the zones and Zone III, Zone VI, Zone VII, the proposed variety surpassed the national check, zonal check as well as local check. Entry IET 30107 (RP6528-RMS 1421-43-25-29) is medium duration, erect, highly vigorous, non-lodging, non-shattering and dark green in color. The plant comes to maturity within 125-130 days, plants are 102 cm tall, and it produces good biomass, long panicles, high grain number (350-450), high test weight, and have medium slender grains with white kernel. IET 30107 has been released as DRR Dhan 75 by Central Subcommittee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of variety and gazette notified on 08.10.2024; Notification No. S.O. 4388 (E).
